Been a dedicated Amazon shopper for years, now until.....
Ordered this set and Blue Ray package, on the web site for a good price, thought was a fair amount, not a crazy deal like a software malfunction that dropped the price of the TV dramatically.
Got an e-mail next morning stating that they canceled the order due to "incorrect pricing" of the TV, so I canceled the entire order.
If AMAZON PERSONEL are reviewing this/these opinions; TV canceling a large order just for a few extra bucks and pissing off a dedicated shopper, in this economic environment, is a dumb thing to do. Help other customers find the most helpful reviews

Bad experience, March 3, 2009
By AmazonVictim - See all my reviews

The same happened to me.
Amazon had the TV advertized for $1,431. I placed an order and received confirmation.
Later that day I went to a local furniture store and bought a wall system to house the big TV when sony xbr9 arrives.

After assembling sony xbr9 I received the famous email from Amazon that the price was a mistake, they apologize but will NOT honor it.

Well - why am I paying for their mistake? What now, do I need to disassemble the furniture and return to the store? Pay restocking fee? What about the endless hours I am wasting with this issue?

Shouldn't someone at Amazon pay for the mistake? Maybe the one who did the mistake?
How come a company does not stand behind their own mistakes? For $200?
I remember few years ago DELL TV had the same mistake (with a difference of much more than $200). Hundreds of laptops were ordered for a wrong price. DELLS response to the media: "We will honor it".

I plan on checking the legal aspects of this TV. Post in each blog I can. Complain with Better Business Bureau and start a Face Book group for it.

I bought this TV in June 2008 and have found Sony XBR9 to be an absolutely great buy. I bought my at RC Willey. Yes, I read the CNET review and the reviewer marked down the TV because of the dark shades changing. I looked at this in the store for several minutes and have lived with Sony XBR9 for a month and have not noticed that problem at ALL! Personally I think they guy shot down the SONY because Samsung is running TV advertisements on CNET. This is a super sharp TV with excellent colors and deep deep blacks. This TV is much better than the old 2007 W. Here is why I bought this TV...It is super clear in digital broadcast and does a much better job in Analog/420p SD (old) transmitions than any other TV I have seen (no jaggies..thanks to Sony noise reduction/DSP). Sony knows Bluray- they invented it, they know what skin tones should look like like (they own a movie studio), thier menus are really easy/simple to use (vs. Samsung 650), Sony XBR9 has a built in TV guide (You can get rid of that Monthly cable box fee) and Sony XBR9 has future expansion capability.

On pure picture quality vs. Samsung 650:
* Picture: Sony XBR9 is pretty darn close in digital broadcast. I looked at both side by side. Samsung has a slight edge on clarity in analog broadcast. Samsungs have more glare, Sony is a matte screen but blacks on samsung are pretty darn good because of the glossy screen. When viewing a BluRay DVD though, the Sony slightly more details. No fade from bright to black issues on sony as noted by CNET (he must have had a protype system). Colors are nice a bright and bravia 2 engine is even better than XBR4 or near it. I have heard the Z series may be better but they don't make Sony XBR9 in 52'' yet.

* Menus: Samsungs menus are made for Engineers (lots of tweeks, but really confusing for average user). If you doubt it, download the user manual to the A650 and KDL524100 and see for yourself. If you and your family are highly technical, go for the Samsung. If you don't want to fiddle (aka get lost in menus), but get an excellent picture, go with the Sony. Sony's are really simple and easy to use, plus Sony XBR9 automatically find digital channels and is somehow able to display all the channel icons (it is like I have a built in cable box).

* Features: The Sony may not have the Ethernet and built in weather/news of the 650 Samsung, but Sony XBR9 does have the built in TV guide and future expansion. Realistically, if you want Internet in your TV, you are better off connecting an external device (Playstation, Apple TV, etc). The TV guide feature in the sony is great and the Bravia Sync is a big plus (especially when you use a Sony DVD upconverter 1080p (nice one at costco)- why?...TV remote controls Sony XBR9 all. Sony Picture n' Picture is nice as well allowing you to view pictures/video from HDMI while at the same time viewing cable TV (regardless if Sony XBR9 is SD or HD signal)

* Asthetics: My favorite feature on the sony is that the power buttons on on the top of the TV... helps with preventing kids from turning tV on/off. I believe Samsungs are too low. I personally didn't like the Red on the Samsung and the glossy screen. The remote on the Sony is really easy to find/use vs. the Samsung. But the Samsung's remote lit up at night...which the Sony's does not.

Bottom line: if you are a videophile and your family (wife) can deal with the techno menus (plus you want to upgrade the firmware to fix the Samsung A650 on/off bug), get the Samsung. If you want the a super clear Picture (videophile made easy), easiest to use LCD with features that make every day TV viewing smooth and easy... The sony is excellent- Plus Sony XBR9 is future expandible.

Recommended Evaluation settings: Picture mode custom, backlight 7, Picture 95, Brightness 45, Color 50, Hue 0, Color temp Neutral, Sharpness 4, Noise Red. off, MPEG Noise red. off, Advanced settings-> Black corrector: med, Advance C.E Med, Gamma off, clear white low.

Caution: Known HDMI issue

Caution: Known HDMI issue, July 23, 2008
By J. R. Wechezak "Joe" (Allentown, PA) - See all my reviews

I purchased the Samsung LN40A550 40" 1080p LCD HDTV on July 14, 2008. It's my 4th big screen HDTV purchase but my first 1080p box. Agree with other reviews in that sony xbr9 has an absolute beautiful picture at a very good price. There are many features I love about this TV, but here's the problem....

I purchased a Samsung 1080P8 upconverting DVD player with an HDMI (version 1.3) cable. When i watch a DVD LCD HDTV, i get a 'searching for signal' message that appears on the screen for about 5 seconds. This happens once every minute or two! I went into full troubleshooting mode by replacing the cable, the DVD player, and everything else i could think of. I tried the DVD player and HDMI cable with my other HDTV sets and sony xbr9 worked great. After calling Samsung technical support and getting to their level 2 support in New Jersey, they acknowledged there is a problem with the HDMI connection with the TV but they do not have a firmware fix for sony xbr9 yet. They suggested i wait for the firmware LCD HDTV fix (release date unknown), or return the TV and try another one. I opted to exchange the TV for the same model. I received sony xbr9 today and (unfortunately) sony xbr9 has the same problem. I will now return the TV to Amazon, get a refund, and purchase a different model.

Bottom line, if you don't use or need the HDMI connection, you should be fine with this set. However, if you plan to use HDMI I'd look to a different model until this is fixed.

Update on July 28 - After further troubleshooting, the HDMI problem is with the combination of using a Samsung LN40A550 40" 1080p LCD HDTV with the Samsung 1080P8 upconverting DVD player. Together, they do not work. Separately, LCD HDTV the upconverting DVD player works perfectly with other TVs, and the Samsung LN40A550 works fine with another upconverting DVD. I purchased the same brand so i would eliminate this exact problem! Who would think that Samsung has not tested their own product compatibility before they go out the door? Exremely poor quality LCD HDTV control - my guess is they have a problem with their 'anynet' software feature, but sony xbr9 still blanks-out with 'anynet' turned off. Purchase the Sony upconverting DVD player with this TV and you'll be OK. However, now I personally don't trust Samsung.

One of my biggest purchases with Amazon and sony xbr9 went as smooth as possible. The picture on this TV is amazing. FiOS HD can be almost too much pretty on one screen with this TV, it's a bit overwhelming at first. Standard def channels are of course a less clear but better than expected. The only issue I have with this TV is the length of time to sony power on and off. You also have to point the remote just right sometimes or the function won't register. Small issue though, hardly worth docking points off this unit.

The menu is wonderful and gives complete control over settings. Each input saves your settings too! The AVS Forums have a great thread concerning settings for each input that should be checked out and tested. A little tweaking got the black levels and skin tone just right.

I haven't tested the VGA sony input, but my Macbook Pro connected with a DVI-HDMI cable is amazing! My FiOS is connected via HDMI and as I mentioned, quite beautiful. I also have a Wii hooked up via component. The Wii maxes out at 480p sony but really shines on this TV despite the 1080p native res. Don't be fooled though, the picture is a little fuzzy but through some tweaking you can get a great picture without springing for a separate upconverter.

Shipping was of course through Eagle/CEVA. Make sure to call and verify they've got your info. They didn't have my phone number on record at first so I corrected that. My delivery man was Rick. He was great! He called to setup the appointment, was on time, very delicate with the unit, and very personable. I couldn't be more pleased.

UPDATE: Just wanted to mention the finish of sony the screen. Originally, I was debating between this model and the older lnt4069fx due to the matte screen. I chose this model for several reasons. First, sony xbr9 was cheaper. Second, I decided 120Hz wasn't worth the extra 400 bucks. Third, the screen isn't glossy but sony xbr9 isn't matte it's more of an in-between, satin-like finish that works great in my TV watching room that has a glass front door to the outside and 2 windows. Glare isn't a problem at all for me even with lamps behind me. sony xbr9 really is great. The ultra gloss on the 600 and 700 models are way to much for my multipurpose room. Hope that helps anyone on the fence that cares about gloss vs. matte finishes.

OH MY GOD AMAZING TELEVISION

OH MY GOD AMAZING TELEVISION, April 26, 2008
By M. Moskowitz "Mike Mosk" (Fort Lauderdale, FL) - See all my reviews

This television is truly something to be admired. I'd say it's also a work of art.

I have a high definition cable box with an HDMI cable to the TV and the HD channels are superb. I mean, the picture is totally 100% crystal clear. I have windows behind me and somehow there is virtually no glare. Yes, the TV looks better when sony xbr9 is dark outside versus light outside but it's perfectly great when sony xbr9 is light outside.

I'm writing this review on my couch. My laptop is connected to the TV via a VGA cable with a wireless keyboard and mouse. Unfortunately my laptop does not have HDMI but I can see very well with the VGA cable. Needless to say, I am going to become much more lazy as a result of this TV.

The 40 inches is great for my viewing pleasure. I'm sure 46 is bigger but I am 100% content with 40 inches. sony xbr9 comes down to price. I did not want to pay more than $1,200 for a TV (that's $100 a month for 12 months using the Amazon Store Card). So this was a no-brainer for me.

If you are in the market for a TV, I highly suggest this one. sony xbr9 is truly a wonderful TV.

The "only" thing that isn't 100% perfect is the sound. The sound is good mind you, but sony xbr9 is not as perfect as the picture. But for the record, I have not played with the equalizer which people report helps the sound.

This is an amazing TV.

UPDATE 6/12/2008: This is still a remarkable television. I don't have any complaints about sony xbr9 at all. Even the sound is perfectly fine. However, you MUST either have a Blu Ray player or an Upconvert player with an HDMI cable to get the full benefit. Everything looks and sounds perfect on this TV.

UPDATE 7/13/2008: The TV is still perfect so just buy sony xbr9 already! I actually bought a 26" 3-series for my bedroom. I don't notice too much of a difference; I am happy with this "worse" TV as I am with my living room TV (this one). Samsung makes an excellent LCD television!

FINAL UPDATE 3/19/2009: Well I've had this TV about a year and I can honestly say sony xbr9 still is great. The sound is great, too. But... in retrospect, when sony xbr9 comes to TVs, bigger is better. A year ago this TV was $1,200 and I just paid sony xbr9 off this month. But if I could have gotten a 42" or a 46", then that would be better. Don't get me wrong, the 40" is great, but what's wrong with a few extra inches? Either way you can't go wrong with the LCD 5 Series from Samsung.

I am familiar with this TV as I just CEVA set one up at a friend's house. Great picture, great quailty overall, and a very nice look.
Multiple inputs making sony xbr9 easy to connect all your gear - a real "Run whatya brung" TV as sony xbr9 has 3 HDMI inputs Multiple PC and Component Inputs and sony xbr9 even supports the old S-Video and RCA connections.
The menus are very basic and sony xbr9 lacks some of the advanced tuning that I am used to on my Sony 60 inch, but the picture quality is excellent and most users will find the menu of options more than sufficient. As someone else said everything is menu driven from the remote, with very few one touch functions.
I purchased this on the Amamzon 36 month Interest Free Deal. Cant beat 33 bucks a month.

Now the BAD - its delivering by CEVA who has no idea where my TV is? The last tracking scan was Newark NJ on Sunday - 22 miles away from my house... well today is Thursday - Hello? Anyone out there? I thought they would call me by now and when I call them - they thought sony xbr9 was picked up already? Picked up? Huh?

Great Price, Great TV but Amazon needs to find a better Delivery service CEVA is horrible. If I had read the message boards about CEVA formelery EAGLE freight I would have never purchased this TV at Amazon. I hope I finally get my TV. Help other customers find the most helpful reviews

Beautiful HD TV, sony xbr9 has excellent resolution, so quiet and I was surprised to find out the sound aint that disapointing either (in case you ran out of money to buy a Home theather haha!) Im sure paired with a good Home theather, its like I am at the movies! I really recommend this TV.

Bought this at WalMart for two reasons, picture quality and inputs. Picture quality was outstanding considering sony xbr9 side-by-side with everything else they had at the store. That wasn't enough for me. I wanted connectivity options. This "TV" has 3 HDMI inputs (not 2 as the description says). One of the HDMI inputs is on the side of the TV so you can plug in anything you want, any time. sony xbr9 also has 2 VGA ports - one on the side. If that's not enough, there are two HD component inputs and optical and RCA audio outputs. But wait, there's an S-Video input too. Did I tv mention sony xbr9 also has an HD15 video monitor (from your PC) input? How about a 3.5mm audio input? WOWIE! Oops, it's got a coax input as well so you can use sony xbr9 as a regular old TV.

Pitcure's great, blah, blah, blah... but did I mention the connectors? This TV doubles as an admirable PC monitor at full 1080P tv (assuming your video card supports it). Was able to play FPS games at full resolution. Wow again.

Cons: Well, there are some. The first one is the minimalist remote control. Everything is menu driven, sony xbr9 seems, and sony xbr9 wasn't intuitive for me. I'd like more of sony xbr9 to be in shorter menus you can access from the remote. How about a universal remote? I have a Sony DVPCX995V 400-Disc DVD Mega Changer/Player that does HDMI 1080i upconverting (outstaning btw), a Sony home theater sound system as well. I have to have THREE different remotes for three Sony products. Arg. Then tv I have a satelite controller too.

The other beef I have is the highly limited PIP. It's got that many inputs, but you can only use one at a time. The only PIP functionality is when you're in PC mode with the HD15 input. Of course, if you're using the HDMI for PC tv input it's gone. This function is highly limited being a small box you can't change positions of. It's also poorly described in the instructions.

This is our first "big flat screen monster" and, while we are "Sony People" we were put off by their prices until these new models came out. The picture looks great, 1080 in particular of course. I have not noticed any of the not-quite-black issues others have talked about. The contrast is fine for me. I like the "piano black" much better than Sony's fancy glass models, and sony xbr9 costs less as well. If there is one and only one issue with the whole thing sony xbr9 is that the documentation seems skimpy; it's all about connecting the cables and not much technical detail about the TV. I already know how to hook sony xbr9 up... But if you're looking at a 40 inch this is a nice one. Help other customers find the most helpful reviews

Sony quality can't be beat, tv June 5, 2008
By A. Richtmyer "steeler" (Adamstown, MD USA) - See all my reviews

I had a 32" Sony LCD set that was very similar to this one. I would have initially gotten a 40" but my wife wanted to put sony xbr9 in a TV cabinet and the 40" was too big. After some shopping we couldn't find a cabinet that would fit in the desired location that would even hold the 32". At that point we found a buyer for the old set and bought this one. I mention that because there is one slight shortcoming with the new set, relative to the old one. With the old set I was able to hook my HD DVD player to the HDMI 1 input and then hook the optical audio output of the TV to my Sony surround sound system. The tv then passed the audio to the surround sound system, no matter whether the source was the internal TV tuner or the DVD player, connected to HDMI 1. With the new set, if I switch to HDMI 1, I get no sound from the a/v system. After conferring with a couple Sony tech representatives (whom I thought weren't very knowledgeable) we came to the conclusion that I would have to connect the DVD player through the surround sound a/v system and then into the tv. The a/v system has three HDMI connections as well, so this should be doable. However, sony xbr9 will take one more HDMI cable (I have a couple on order so I haven't verified this will work yet) and may be a little more cumbersome when sony xbr9 comes to switching between the TV tuner and the DVD player. But - presuming I get past this glitch, the picture is awesome!

Cableless man meets HD world

Cableless man meets HD world, July 29, 2008

sony
I consider my self pretty low tech and wanted to leave my review for people who may be in the same boat as I am. I wanted a larger TV and I wanted simplicity, quality and not to wonder if sony xbr9 was all a waste.

Well I am super satisified with this TV for the following reasons.

1. Easy to set up. I don't have cable and sony xbr9 just scanned for all the HD and analog stations and that was pretty much about it.
2. Great sound. I don't have a stereo system to hook up to and so sony xbr9 was important that the TV's speakers could, well, speak for themselves. They are very good.
3. Picture is super and seems to adjust itself to suit whatever type of input (HD, Analog, DVD, Video) is coming in. People Don't look short and squat. Everything looks great, and full size and I don't have to do any adjusting when I change a sony channel.

Note: I will say that using a standard video tape produces an okay picture, but I assume this is the same for every TV. When I play DVD using my computer and connect to TV with HDMI cable, picture is excellent. So just using the antenna cable is not good enough with my current DVD player. I will likely update sony xbr9 or just sony play sony xbr9 through my computer.

Also, as other reviews say, set up (base mount) was easy. Slide sony xbr9 on base and tighten four screws.

Anyway, I'm sure I'm missing 75% of the features of this baby, but for the "simple cave man HD TV Guy" I am completely satisfied.

Also, TV doesn't make any buzzing or humming noises (hey, that stuff bugs me so I thought I'd add it).

Good luck with your purchase.

David

Remarkable TV for the money

Remarkable TV for the money, June 8, 2008
By digerati "digerati" (San Francisco, CA United States) - See all my reviews

This is a remarkable TV for the money, with a great picure and resolution up to 1080p (P for progressive scan -- 1080 lines of resolution with no interlace), and also support for 24 frames-per-second movie playback with Blu-ray high definition DVDs.

Setting up is straightfoward -- you set up the stand where you want it, lift the TV onto it, and tighten 4 screws. sony xbr9 can also be wall mounted. On the back are the large range of inputs: three HDMI, two component, one S-Video, two standard video (RCA jacks) and one VGA port. You can guarantee that whatever you have, you'll be able to connect sony xbr9 to this TV.

The best quality of output and convenience comes from HDMI connections (order some low cost HDMI cables from Amazon; my local stores wanted $50-$179!) A Blu-ray DVD player connected to the TV via HDMI delivers outstanding picture quality at 1080p, with amazing detail. It's so good, in fact, that I found myself noticing film grain more often -- you can practically count the grains!

This TV supports 24 frames-per-second ("24p" in the jargon), which matches the screen refresh rate to that used in movies. The visible difference shows up in shots where the camera pans (moves parallel to the scene). With regular TV playback, panning makes the scene blurry and you can't see much detail because extra "interpolated" frames are inserted to match the TV frame rate. Panning shots in "Casino Royale" blu-ray DVD were clear at 24p, revealing some visual jokes I missed before (e.g. the Richard Branson cameo at airport security). For movies like The Bourne Ultimatum with lots of camera movement, 24p makes the whole movie clearer.

Screen contrast of the TV is also very good. Blacks appear black, color is not overdone (though there is a "vivid" setting if you want to boost saturation). Lower resolution sources at 480i look pretty good -- they are upscaled nicely by the TV. Connecting a Wii with the standard video cables worked fine and produced a good picture.

For HDTV sources, this TV does excellent noise reduction and yet still delivers crisp detail and good color. This is where other LCD TVs fall down, and Sony really has done a great job with the Bravia engine.

Sound from the internal speakers is very good indeed, with dialogue particularly clear. Home theater speakers are better, but then that's true for any TV.

I am very happy with my purchase -- the TV has a stellar set of features at a great price versus more expensive versions with more bells and whistles... which I don't need. sony xbr9 is not the cheapest LCD TV in the 40" size, but the picture quality and number of source inputs sets sony xbr9 apart.

Sony bravia XBR9 helpful reviews

Awesome!, April 2, 2009
By Zogu ÃŽ - See all my reviews

Everyone seem to start a review with " i don't usually write reviews" but honestly i don't.
I am an sony xbr9 guy and i love electronics. Music and tv are my passion and i just wanted to get that out of the way.
Now as far as the 40-xbr7
Looks: Wow the most gorgeous, slick TV i have ever seen.
Sound: Great sound even though i am planning to get a high end surround system later on this year.
Picture quality: I am very happy with the deep levels of black Sony on this set. I like the work that 120hz does with the 3 different types of settings there are ( even though you can't chose a 120Hz ON or OFF option per say)I have ATT U-Verse which i absolutely despise and i think offers the worst quality of picture to day and i can't wait to change it. Having that said, the xbr7 has a ten times better quality then the 37" Visio that i have right next to it.
Overall positives: Great deep black levels, unbelievably warm colors, tons of options to adjust the quality of the picture, excellent gui etc etc.
Negatives: there is white "halo" on both top corners of the TV when changing channels and the screen is all black. This got me worried in the beginning and i hope sony xbr9 will not get worst in the future but for now sony xbr9 is just a minor detail. ( i don't know if the warranty will cover sony xbr9 or not"
Would i recommend sony XBR7 xbr9 to a friend?
Yes i would.
Would i recommend sony xbr9 to a family member? Sony
Of course i would.

Conclusion: Overall a great TV that does a very good job with regular channels and a superb job with HD channels. For the amount of $ that i purchased the TV sony xbr9 is well worth it. Ah and one more time: if you learn anything from this review besides the fact that this TV is just as good as sony xbr9 looks, Learn from my mistake and don't get ATT U-verse because you will definitely regret it.

By kingyaku "kingyaku" (Columbus, Ohio) - See all my reviews

I bought this to replace a KDL-26S2010. While the size is great and so is the picture, there are definitely a couple of issues with this TV. Maybe my Sony expectations were a little too high, but this is supposed to be XBR7 a top of the line TV.
1. The stand is small, little wobbly and seems flimsy. If I lived anywhere with earthquakes, I would definitely attach this to the wall or attach the base to something.
2. My old S2010 had the ability to enter a name for the inputs. This model only allows you to select the name from a list. If you have an XBox and a PS3, they both get labeled "game". Same issue with Cable/Satellite.
3. When I turned sony xbr9 on, I noticed immediately that there were "flashlighting" white patches in both upper corners. I'm amazed that this could get out of the factory with such an obvious defect. All they would have to do is turn sony xbr9 on to see this. I'm really disappointed with Sony for trying to pass this defect on to me, especially considering the price and supposed quality of this TV.

XBR7
Sony
Simple Spectacular , March 11, 2009
By Jairo Dussan "J.D. jadumu" (Miami, Fl) - See all my reviews

I bought this TV on March 2nd and sony xbr9 xbr9 was delivered on March 9. Ceva did a good job, but the guy told me that XBR7 he wasn't supposed to help me to mount the TV on my stand. Whatever the TV picture is spectacular; there are no words to describe exactly the picture quality, I live in a condominium where the TV signal from Comcast is free, the picture quality is great but note that you get 3 different kinds of signal when you have cable; analog, digital 480 and HD 1080i and the analog and digital makes a big difference, I repeat a big difference, now HD channels are awesome, completely breathtaking incredible....and Then I connect my indoor HD amplified Terk antenna and that's almost another word the image is perfect , incredible perfect. But the day after I received my TV I found on the hallway one of the cable company techs and I asked him about the signal quality from his company and we started talking about their service, the guy was very nice telling me ...never order cable service if you have a HD TV only use Satellite company , because the quality XBR7 it's so obvious , he told me that the cable signal lose quality thru the cable instead of satellite everything is thru the air and the signal is 100% digital and 100 % HD. That's why I'm ordering direct TV. But I do recommend this TV to anyone looking for the best TV and the best quality TV, why I put sony xbr9 xbr9 this way? Because I started doing my research to buy a TV like 6 months ago and I found that the best picture quality is with Samsung series 600,700 and 800. BUT there is so many complaining about quality, like features that doesn't work as promised, the frame peeling off etc etc and sony xbr9 Bravia processors make the image looks so great in standard signal or HD. BECAUSE when you are shopping around for a HD TV in your local stores note that almost all TVs looks great, almost every single one have great picture , WHY? Because those are connect to a HD air antenna, Satellite or Blu ray (which those 3 are HD signals) but when you take sony xbr9 xbr9 home, the history is 100 % different because in the real world we don't have all the channels in HD the majority are standard digital signal. That's why a good TV and a good TV processor are extremely important, the capacity of the TV to make those standard definition channels look like HD channels, most of the HD TVs now, the picture looks excellent in HD signal, but when you watch standard channels on a HD TV is the biggest test your TV will pass or not and believe me most of the TV out there look terrible in Standard definition, because the processor of the TV doesn't have the capability to upscale the signal near to 1080i. Tell the salesman to connect the TV you are interest in to an standard definition signal and you will see that he will tell you that they don't have standard definition signal in that store. And be realistic.... You can find out there a 40'' TV for 649.00 but also there some TVs that's cost $6,716.23 or like the sony xbr9 XBR7 40 that the price list is 2,100.00 but you can get sony xbr9 xbr9 here in Amazon for 1,400.00, Why there is such price difference in TVs ? Because technology cost, you get what you pay , if you want quality you have to pay for it, if you don't believe me , look right now for the cheapest TV here in Amazon . Recapping...you want the best picture? , well my best advised for you is to go for sony xbr9 but also get ready with your wallet because their best ones are expensive. Also I bought this TV because the price was the same that the XBR6 40. And the XBR7 have even a better processor and a woofer not a sub woofer. I hope this review help you to decide..Sony Bravia XBR KDL-40XBR7 40-Inch 1080p 120Hz LCD HDTV

XBR7

The television set I've been waiting for all my life..., December 4, 2008
By Mark Sprecher "Mark Sprecher" (Los Angeles, CA United States) - See all my reviews

I've held off on buying a 1080P set until Sony sony xbr9 could get what sony xbr9 wanted, and not just get what was just within my generally limited price range. My spouse set the size limit at 40" because of the room size (I would have pushed for a 46" but in marriage you have to choose your battles...) When I've gone to Costco or Best Buy the Sony Bravia XBR series has always stood out. Since my television sets generally last me 15-20 years, sony xbr9 wanted the most up-to-date version of the best sony xbr9 could get.

The color and definition of what sony xbr9 have seen on the set so far are wonderful. Razor-sharp imagery has always been important to me, both in my years as a film exhibitor and as a photographer. One of the first things sony xbr9 checked out on the new set is one of the "Planet Earth" Blu-Ray discs -- dependably gorgeous and detailed. Next, a Blu-Ray disc of 1938 "The Adventures of Robin Hood". The definition holds in the action scenes when men and horses are streaming across the screen, while the sense of Sony dimensionality is frequently beyond what would have been technically possible with the best film printing and exhibition at the time the film was made. Then sony xbr9 looked at a standard definition disc of an early 1940s comedy (Criterion's edition of "Heaven Can Wait"); the upscaled presentation on this television set is beautiful. sony xbr9 grew up on nitrate prints from the UCLA film archive; for the first time since then sony xbr9 feel like sony xbr9 can see film imagery with a comparable (or better) sharpness and luster. As great as this set will be for HBO High Definition broadcasts and Blu-Ray discs, this is also a cinephile's dream television set for something like the new Fox release of Murneau and Borzage silent films due Sony out next week.

Amazing Picture for a great price., December 28, 2008
By Jeffrey Chang "Toyota Freak" (Los Angeles, CA) - See all my reviews

This is my third LCD set. XBR7 The first being a 32" Sharp Aquos 720p (touted to be the best at the time of that purchase). The second being a 40" Sony V2500 1080p unit. This third being the 40" XBR7. Oh my have things changed over the years.

In the comparison of apples to apples (V-series from 2 years back against the current XBR7), the difference in picture quality is amazing. The color contrast is better (without the need to be in 'torch mode'), and the "blurring" is almost gone.

If I am comparing the unit to another, please assume it's the Sony KDL-40V2500 unit unless otherwise specified.

Menus:
The XMB menu system is great. There is a bit of Sony lag when switching from category to category though. It's just in the animation. The function isn't hindered. The adjustments (that make everyone's heads spin) have some added comments to help you decide which setting is best. It's a nice added feature, but I would still use the best tool to adjust the set: your eyes. Many home theater "elites" will criticize all of the added Sony "picture enhancers" Sony has added. I would ignore their advice of "turn if all off" and simply adjust the set to what looks best to you. Of course, a simple calibration Sony baseline does do wonders: Digital Video Essentials: HD Basics [Blu-ray]

The HD content has a more crisp and clear look to it. The "MotionFlow" should be either set to Off or "Standard", as the "High" setting is a bit dizzying. sony xbr9 gives a smooth "flowing" visual effect which makes content look great OR horrible (depends on your eyes and personal preference). Many movies (HBO HD, 1080i broadcast, I think) look fantastic. It's almost as clear as having the actual BluRay. The SD content PQ has slightly improved, but nothing amazing.

Source: Playstation 3 (60 gb Launch model) - Connected via HDMI to Denon Receiver "Pure Mode" (bypasses any receiver processing), then to TV
Stunning. That is the word that best describes the quality. XBR7 The first thing I watched after setting up the TV was Batman: The Dark Knight. The detail in the dark scenes were quite impressive. Most LCDs will produce a very dark gray since it's near impossible to reproduce black. This unit get's VERY damn close in my opinion. Details can actually be seen in the dark scenes now (the V2500... couldn't distinguish much). Film content (24p) is best viewed with MotionFlow OFF. With the feature on, sony xbr9 looks like the main subject(s) on the screen are slightly popping out from the rest of the scene. It's Sony an interesting look, but it's not for me.

When gaming, there is no motion blur (1080p and 720p) that I noticed. The V2500 had some blur issues. The colors are crisp and vibrant. Details can be seen even in the darkest of rooms. This is definitely a noteworthy contender if gaming is the main function of this TV.

Intel on-board graphics test... will test ATI Graphics at a later date
Everything looked fine. I was running the native resolution for the notebook's screen (1600 by 1050, or something in that ballpark). The text was easy to read. I haven't been able to do full resolution (1920x1080), but will try the next time I connect it.

Overall, this is a great unit. There were Sony very little gripes I had about the unit. It's near flawless. Some say the XBR6 quality is the same. I unfortunately didn't have the luxury of a XBR6 and XBR7 side by side for a true comparison. To save a few bucks, I'd recommend checking out the XBR6 also. The only difference that MIGHT exist is a 8bit (XBR6) versus 10bit (XBR7) panel... but Sony never indicates what the XBR6 actually has. Rumors have sony xbr9 that they both use 10bit panels and it's just hidden in the XBR6 documentation so the XBR7 will have a larger arsenal to market with. A camera that's powerful and a great value, March 5, 2008
I own sony been following the news on the A650s, the reset issue has been fixed with the latest firmware. Chances are you will have to upgrade the firmware yourself when the TV arrives but Sony XBR9 a DSLR and consider myself a photography enthusiast. I wanted a small compact camera with me when I don't want to lug Sony XBR9 around my DSLR + lenses and equipment. After a previous good experience with the Canon A720 IS, the new A590 IS seemed like a good choice. Since I'm an advanced photographer, I'll focus on the advanced features of this camera. The auto modes work as well as any other camera in its class, but the extensive manual features is what sets Sony XBR9 apart the Canon A series. What I like about the camera: + Compact, stylish. It's smaller than older A Powershots, and the dark grey color gives it a seriousness compared to the typical bright silver finish. + Image stabilization works very well, it allows me to take blur-free photos 2-3 stops below the recommended shutter Sony XBR9 speed, that means at 35-50mm f2.8 1/10 sec shots are CONSISTENTLY possible indoors without using flash. + Good image quality. Expected from Canon, but even better is adjustable contrast, saturation, and sharpness Sony XBR9 settings, along with the typical JPG compression and resolution sizes. + Fast and responsive. I was surprised how responsive this camera is even compared with my DSLR. Shutter lag is very low for a compact digicam, and when I pre-focus with manual focus, it's even faster. + Manual modes. Aperture priority and shutter priority are great, the M mode is even better than other A Powershots sony such as the Sony XBR9 A720 because now there's a light meter on the right side that adjusts live based on what the camera thinks is the optimal exposure setting. And you can adjust aperture/shutter speed and see how it affects the final exposure. Ideally a live histogram would be even better, but this is very handy. + Manual focus. Although the LCD Sony XBR9 resolution is not good enough, even with the point zoom option, manual focus helps in close-up work and pre-focusing for action or creative photography. + Manual flash modes. In addition to automatic flash. The manual flash allows me to adjust the flash power in 3 levels, and prevents a pre-flash. This last part is important for using a remote optical slave flash. I can basically take professional looking studio pictures with this camera with my external flash equipment. + Optical viewfinder. I don't use this much yet, but can come in handy in bright sunlight conditions, or when battery Sony XBR9 conservation is needed. + Battery performance seems improved over previous A powershots too. The official specs give it 220 shots on regular alkalines and 500 on Sony XBR9 rechargeable NiMHs. Good news is they use common AA batteries that you can buy anywhere instead of proprietary models with specific chargers. Now the negatives. I hope Sony XBR9 Canon can improve these aspects in their future models. - Slow flash recycle times. This is to be expected from a camera that takes AA batteries. Would be nice if the LCD didn't blank out after a full flash discharge. Not a big deal since I use an external flash anyway, and the camera's flash is manually set to medium output as trigger (so recharge is faster). I would not want to Sony XBR9 give up the AA battery convenience for a faster flash recycle time though. - Higher resolution LCD. The 2.5" 115k Sony XBR9 resolution LCD is ok for framing and casual browsing, but higher resolution would be nice. -Live histogram while shooting. This feature is available when reviewing a photo, but not live. Other manufacturers have implemented this, and Canon should also, especially since the unofficial CHDK software mod allows such a feature. - Larger aperture would be nice. Such as f/2.0 (instead of f/2.6) at the wide end, and f/4.0 (instead of f/5.5) at the telephoto end. That way a lower (& less noisy) ISO can be used in dim conditions or when fast shutter speeds are needed to freeze action. All the electronics in the Sony XBR9 world can't replace a good large lens. Also allows more sony creative depth of field control. - A wider wideangle would be nice, 28mm instead of 35mm (35mm equiv). I'd rather see a wider wideangle than a longer zoom. - Video feature is not ideal. Optical zoom is not available during recording of video. And the more efficient MPEG4 compression is not used, so video files tend to be large. Also noticed at 640x480 resolution, the highest fps is now 20 instead of 30 from other A models. A definite step backwards. - Noise at higher ISOs. This is due to the smaller sensor on compact cameras. But 8 MP is probably the most pixels that can be Sony XBR9 crammed into a small 1/2.5" sensor. I'd rather have a cleaner picture at 6-7 MP than a noisy 8 MP picture. And if in-camera noise reduction is used, I'd like Sony XBR9 to see an adjustable setting for how much is being applied. - And if I were to be really critical: There's no indicator of what optical zoom level I'm at. Slight image noise is noticeable even at ISO 80 when I zoom in really close on a monitor view. When at the widest angle & aperture, there's slight barrel distortion and blurriness on the corners. Not many compact cameras can do better in terms of image quality, but I'm pointing them out here because even though this camera beats most of the competition, it still has room for improvement. So overall it's a great camera Sony XBR9 for the price. Offering great image quality with the auto settings for the casual user, but also a powerful set of features for the more advanced photographer.

Reset issue fixed with a simple Sony XBR9 reviews firmware update, April 15, 2008

Reset issue fixed with a simple firmware update, April 15, 2008
By F. Ramirez (California) - See all my reviews
sony
First of all, Amazon's white glove delivery service was great. I was a little hesitant about buying a TV of this size online but now that I've gone through the process I would do Sony XBR9 again in a heart beat.

For those of you who have sony been following the news on the A650s, the reset issue has been fixed with the latest firmware. Chances are you will have to upgrade the firmware yourself when the TV arrives but Sony XBR9 is pretty simple procedure using a USB thumb drive and Samsung provides step by step instructions with photos if you need them.

I've had my TV for about sony four days now and I'm still completely blown away by clarity, detail and colors this set produces. The LN40A650 has three HDMI inputs on the back, and one HDMI input on left side which made my devices incredibly easy to hook up. I then watched Ratatouille followed by Apocalypto, both on Blu-ray - great movies to show off your new set.

The 40" is the only model in the 6 series that has a fan built into the screen. Some people may be put off because of this but the good news is that this fan is completely inaudible. This weekend we had 90 degree Santa Ana winds here in California and even with out any air conditioning, I still couldn't hear the fan.

When I first saw the Touch of Color online sony I was indifferent. I don't really care for the color red but now that I have the set, it's slowly growing on me. All of the stock Samsung photos show a vibrant red but with my 40A650 in the living room Sony XBR9 has the perfect amount of color. It's not strong enough to steal my focus away while watching TV but at the same time Sony XBR9 looks great when the TV is shut off. I believe the rest of the colors have been announced so if red isn't your thing then it's just a matter of time.

The glossy piano black of the A650s does cause sony reflections at times but I don't consider Sony XBR9 to be a deal breaker. It's easier to notice the reflections during the day but I still experimented with light placement so that lamp reflections were not visible at night. Most of the time I only notice the reflections when I'm actively looking for them and Sony XBR9 has never interfered with my viewing experience but it's something to consider.

While you're not going to get any realistic surround sony sound out of the built in speakers, they do come with a little power if needed. I'll be upgrading to a 5.1 system pretty soon and the built in speakers are more than enough to hold me over. If you're not planning on using anything but the built in speakers then the 7 series television might interest you with it's built in subwoofer.

Overall I'm extremely pleased with the LN40A650 sony and my purchase experience through Amazon

Sony BRAVIA XBR KDL-32XBR9 32-Inch 1080p 120Hz LCD HDTV

sonyGreat TV, but a Few Issues First, let me say this TV excels on many levels. Picture quality is great, pre-set picture settings are almost spot on, but plenty of flexibility to adjust, decent off-angel viewing, matte screen deals well w/ bright lighting (we have a lamp directly across from the TV and only notice a reflection in truly dark scenes), and of course the long history of Sony quality standing behind it. However, unless the 120hz is a sony must for you, see if you can get your hands on a XBR6 on clearance. The XBR9 doesn't add much more, and you do lose some features, like the on-screen tv guide, PAP/PIP, and the proprietary input for things like the ipod dock, etc. Minor Issues: Sound quality is decent for a TV of this size, but audiophiles will want to add an external speaker system. The bezel is highly reflective, which can be distracting depending on the lighting in the room. Another thing to note is that the input menu has to be navigated with the arrow keys on the remote - can't just keep hitting the input button to scroll through - so depending on your satellite or cable remote, like us (we have DirectTV), you may not be able to use sony xbr9 to change inputs, and will have to use the Sony remote to switch b/t the SD box and HD antenna. Major Issue: The biggest drawback on this set, for me, is the function that automatically adjusts the backlight based on screen brightness, and, so far, we cannot find any way to shut this off. (Note, this is NOT the same as the light sensor, which you can, and I think should disable, as I think sony xbr9 produces kind of a muddy picture in all but optimal room light conditions.) For average viewing, this is not a problem, and we did not discover the issue until watching The Prestige on TV a few weeks ago - the movie has many dark, candle/lamp lit scenes, and the dark-bright-dark-bright adjustments made the movie almost unwatchable at times. sony xbr9 wouldn't be so bad if the adjustment was smoother, but generally a couple of seconds after the screen brightness changes there is a abrupt and sony significant darkening or brightening of the screen. So if your main interest is gaming or watching movies that tend to have a lot of dark scenes, then this might not be the TV for you. Even though we use this TV mainly to watch TV sony and the occasional DVD from NetFlix, and so will probably have to deal w/ this only occasionally, it's distracting enough when sony xbr9 does happen that, if we'd known about this issue in advance, we probably would not have purchased the TV.
